Scope note
Large, covered freight wagons distinguished by their curving boat-shaped profile with flaring endgates and side panels of planking with a series of short uprights; usually pulled by six horses and used between the mid-18th and mid-19th century in the areas of Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. For similar wagons but characterized by mostly straight lines and linen tops and used across the western prairies and plains to carry freight and emigrants, use "prairie schooners."
